Tips and help for the optimum use of PennySavers.com
Pennysavers.com is your community marketplace. Our hope is that this website helps our readers find the local information they need (products, services, sales, coupons, times, dates etc.) and helps local commerce reach the readers that they need.

Website Organization
The "Search" area is the focal point of PennySavers.com for finding the information you would seek in the printed version of your PennySaver. In this section you can specify what you want to find by category and/or area. A brief description of what you will find in each category is included on the home page. If you are not sure where to find an item, you can search multiple categories and/or publication areas by holding your control key or command key down and clicking on your selections.
Quick Search will allow you to search "all categories, all areas".

About the PennySaver Search Engine
The PennySavers.com search engine is a keyword search. The search engine finds the designated words that are in the ads. If you are searching for a particular item the word(s) you use in the search must be stated in the text of the ad. It is reasonable to expect that the word "car" be used to find advertised cars. However, some sellers will assume you know that when you read their ad that is in the Vehicle Section. In the ad 1996 Dodge Caravan, like new, one owner, only 54K, needs a home, call 555-5555 the word "car" does not appear.

Search
The search area for PennySavers.com is organized into three separate functions.
1. Enter keywords in the spaces provided. Your options are ads: " with all of the words" -meaning if you search for "big dog" the results will include only ads that contain both words "big" and "dog."
" with at least one of the words" -meaning if you search for "big dog" the results will include any ads that include the word "big" as well as any ads that include the word "dog."
" with the exact phrase" - meaning if you search for "big dog" the results will include only those ads that include the words "big dog" together in that order.

2. Search by area by clicking on the area(s) listed in the drop-down box. You can select one or more (or all) of the PennySaver areas to search. If you select Hamburg for instance you will be able to search all the applicable ads that appear in the Hamburg PennySaver, even if it is someone selling services or merchandise for Springville. Search all areas by selecting "All WNY."
Choose as many Publication Areas as you want by holding your control key or command key down and clicking on your selections.

3. Search by category by clicking on the categories listed in the drop-down box. Search all categories by selecting "All Categories." Choose as many categories as you want by holding your control key or command key down and clicking on your selections.
A hint of what you might find in each category is given on the home page.

Quick Search
Quick Search looks in all PennySavers and every category for the word(s) you type into the search box provided. You will find Quick Search at the top left corner of almost every page.

My Saved Ads
The PennySaver "My Saved Ads" feature allows readers to select individual ads and save them in their own personal file throughout the week. This is your private file that only you can access.
Each week (Saturday at midnight) this file will be cleared of all ads and will start fresh for the week. If you would like to save the ads past Sunday you should print the page or save them on your computer's hard-drive.

To create a "My Saved Ads" file click here and you will go to the set up page where you will be asked to create a user name and password. If you wish to supply your email address we will be able to email this information if needed. Your email address will never be used outside of PennySavers.com. If you would prefer not to supply your email address, we will not be able to send your password if you forget it. To view our privacy policy, click here.

To access an existing "My Saved Ads" file you can click here or simply click the "My Saved Ads" button that appears on the top and bottom of each page.

No results
If you are not getting any results from your search there could be one of two reasons, either your search is too narrow or you are in the wrong category.
If you think your search is too narrow try broadening your search to "All Categories" or adding more categories (you may also want to add more PennySaver areas. You can also broaden your search by using the "with at least one of the words" option using a variety of words (i.e. search " German Sheppard dog pet" instead of "German Sheppard."

Too many results
If you are getting more results than you would like, try narrowing the search by using a more specific keyword- instead of searching "used cars" search for a specific make or model "Ford" or "Mustang."
You may also want to use the "with all of the words" or the "with the exact phrase" search options. Keep in mind that search results are displayed according to relevance, top to bottom, meaning the best results should be at the top of the page.

Search results are not what you want
If your results are not what you want try adding or changing the key words you are searching. Think about what key words a seller might use in their ad. Often times a used car is not stated to be used, that is implied in the ad because it is an older model or the mileage is given. Sometimes vacant land or building lots only state size or number of acres for sale without stating "vacant land for sale."

It is possible to view all ads in a specific category by NOT typing in any keywords, selecting that category and selecting the PennySaver area(s) you want to view.

Garage Sales
Garage/Estate/Yard Sale ads can be viewed on our Garage Sales page where they are listed alphabetically by the Town or area name in which they are held. They can also be viewed and searched via the search page.
